Solving a Multigenerational Paternity Mystery with DNA

Can DNA expose a secret a family tried to bury two generations ago? When Ruth came to me she carried a heavy piece of family history: her maternal grandfather had grown up not knowing that the woman he believed was his eldest sister was in fact his biological mother. His father had been left out of the records altogether. Read on to see how DNA testing across two generations is steadily closing in on the small pool of men her biological great-grandfather must be among.

The Challenge

Ruth’s family had held a profound secret for decades. Her maternal grandfather grew up believing one family structure, and learned only later in life that his eldest sister was really his mother.

The paper records had done their job well: the identity of his biological father was hidden, and no document named him. Because the mystery sat two generations back, documentary research alone was never going to solve it. Ruth asked me to unravel it using genetic genealogy.

The Research Process

When a paper trail has been closed deliberately, DNA becomes the truth-teller. Solving a grandfather’s paternity means isolating his particular genetic contribution across the generations that follow him.

1. Testing across two generations

Both Ruth and her mother took DNA tests, and I took over the management of their raw data and their match lists. Having two successive generations tested is what makes this work: comparing their shared matches let me filter out Ruth’s paternal side, and then her grandfather’s maternal line, until what remained was a cluster of matches belonging solely to the grandfather’s biological father.

2. Reverse engineering the trees

With the relevant pool of matches identified, the most intensive phase began: building mirror trees. Many DNA matches have small trees, or no public tree at all. I researched backwards through the branches of these living matches, identifying their ancestors, until I found where those independent trees intersected.

3. Triangulating the shared ancestors

Mapping those intersections located the specific ancestral couple that Ruth’s grandfather shares with his genetic matches. That couple are the great-grandparents, or great-great-grandparents, of the unknown father.

Where the Search Stands

This case is still open, and it is going well.

By tracing the lines down from that ancestral couple, mapping the sons, grandsons and nephews who were of an age and in the right place at the time of the grandfather’s conception, I am compiling a targeted shortlist of the men who could be his father.

A decades-old wall of silence has become a structured, solvable puzzle. When there is a definitive answer, this case study will be updated to record it.
